Sterling Silver

Sterling silver (also known as 925 silver) is composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, such as copper and zinc. This alloy makes sterling silver more durable, as it hardens the silver to hold its shape better. Even though it is generally considered a hypoallergenic metal, the small amount of alloy metals included in sterling silver may still cause irritation in super sensitive skins. In such cases, we recommend switching to either solid gold (at least 14K) or pure silver jewellery.

You can clean your sterling silver jewelry with mild soap and water, then pat dry. Sterling silver naturally oxidizes when exposed to humidity, water, perspiration, cosmetics and other chemicals. Best stored in an airtight container and polished occasionally with the polishing cloth provided to remove the oxidization, unless you prefer the oxidized color better.

We carry a number of styles with "rhodium plated" sterling silver, which prevents the sterling silver from oxidizing and allows the wearer to be able to shower and swim without worrying about tarnishing. Keep in mind that rhodium plating will wear off with use and needs to be reapplied within a couple of years in order to keep the piece tarnish-free and bright looking.

14K Gold-Filled

Gold-filled jewelry contains 5% solid gold by metal weight. This outer layer is not plated but bonded to an inner copper or jeweler's brass base that is neither visible nor exposed to the skin. Therefore, the outer layer of solid gold is up to 100 times thicker than traditional gold-plating. Not only is it a less costly alternative to solid gold, but it is just as durable. Since it looks and acts like solid gold, it is water-resistant. (Though we wouldn't recommend submerging it in water or going swimming with it on for long periods of time.)

When properly taken care of, it will look shiny and new even with decades of wear. Clean your gold-filled jewelry with mild soap and water, then pat dry.

As it is such a thick layer of solid gold that looks and acts like solid gold, 14K gold-filled jewellery is also considered hypoallergenic. There are, however, a tiny percentage of cases where some skins are so sensitive that they react with the outer 14K solid gold layer, which is composed of 58.3% solid gold and 41.7% alloy material (including, but not limited to, copper, silver and zinc). In such cases, we recommend the customer try solid gold jewellery with a higher karat value, such as 18K or 21K, to reduce the amount of alloy materials which the customer's skin may react with.

14K Yellow Gold

14K yellow gold is composed of 58.3% gold and 41.7% alloy metals, such as copper, silver or zinc. These alloys are added into pure gold, which is naturally soft, to make it more durable and give it a more muted gold color. 14K solid gold does not tarnish, does not turn your skin green, and is waterproof. It is a heirloom metal with investment value and may be passed down through generations. Clean your solid gold jewelry with mild soap and water, then pat dry. Use the polishing wipe provided to bring back the shine to your jewellery whenever necessary.

Solid gold is considered a hypoallergenic metal. Almost all allergy issues related to solid gold stem from the other metals reacting with the wearer's skin, such as copper or nickel. (This is why we don't carry rose gold or gold alloys lower than 14 karats in our ready-to-wear styles. For example, 10K solid gold only contains 41.7% pure gold and 58.3% other metals and is not considered hypoallergenic. Rose gold contains primarily copper as an alloy material to turn the color pink and is also not considered allergy-friendly.)

14K gold is a good mix of durability, affordability, and allergen-friendliness. Yet, if you find that 14K is still reacting with your skin, we recommend switching to higher karats of solid gold with less alloy materials, such as 18K or 21K solid gold. Even though we do not carry these karats in our ready-to-wear collections, you can always reach out for custom styles with your preferred solid gold.
